Archaeological Field director Position

Pacific Legacy, Inc. is a Cultural Resources Management firm dedicated to providing quality archaeological and cultural resource management services. We help our clients navigate through regulatory compliance processes and provide an integrated historic preservation program to assist in overall planning — from design to mitigation. Pacific Legacy has immediate openings in our Berkeley and Folsom, California offices for an Archaeological Field Director for various projects in northern and central California.  

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Anthropology/Archaeology, preferably with a focus on California archaeology (priority will be given to experience);
  • Experience in the identification and recordation of pre-contact and post-contact cultural material;
  • Two years of prior experience as a crew chief or field director (five years preferred);
  • Demonstrated field skills (analog and digital), including the completion of site records, GPS data acquisition, and detailed field notes;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage small to medium sized crews, either as a crew chief on larger crews, field directing smaller crews, or a combination of both;
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations applicable to cultural resources (e.g., California Environmental Quality Act, Section 106, National Environmental Policy Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act);
  • Ability to coordinate and work closely with Native American monitors;
  • Technical writing skills and experience preparing field results portions of CRM reports is preferred.

 

The ideal candidate has the ability to:

  • Manage strenuous hiking and changing climate conditions.
  • Stand or kneel for long periods of time and carry up to 30 lbs of gear.
  • Be positive, motivated, and able to work individually or as a team.
  • Be detail oriented with excellent written/verbal communication.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and provide direction to project team members;
  • Be available for five day rotations, with periodic ten day rotations, for extended periods of time (i.e. multiple rotations), as well as shorter one to three day projects;
  • Manage field crew members and monitor working conditions to maintain a safe working environment;
  • Work safely and collaboratively with construction teams and Native American monitors during monitoring projects;
  • Prepare equipment and safety documents for use in the field;
  • Conduct background research in preparation for fieldwork;
  • Manage field deliverables (e.g. notes, site records, photo logs, monitoring logs, mapping) with attention to detail;
  • Research, write and analyze archaeological data sufficient to produce high quality reports;
  • Use field applications including Survey123, FieldMaps, and other software to complete fieldwork;
  • Use office platforms including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. A working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator is a plus;
  • Collect and process GPS data. Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro is a plus;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive field vehicles;
  • And work in remote areas with rough terrain and changing weather conditions for extended field sessions.

 

Compensation and benefits:

Salary is competitive and determined based on experience and qualifications, ranging from $28 to $38 an hour.

Per Diem: For non-local projects lodging is single-occupancy and meals per diem is offered. Per diem type is contract/project dependent (e.g. flat-rate versus receipts-based).
