Our team of archaeologists and historic preservation specialists meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation (36 CFR Part 61). Each is well versed in the compliance measures that help ensure the protection of sensitive cultural resources while, moving projects forward.

Natural Investigations has an immediate opening for a full-time Principal Investigator, ideally in the Sacramento area with some flexibility for a hybrid schedule.

The Principal Investigator is responsible for timely and cost-effective design and implementation of effective research designs within constraints of project schedules and budgets and producing quality technical documents unique to each project constraints.

The successful candidate will execute the broader goals of the project based on established research design objectives and applicable investigation standards.

Responsibilities

  • Recommends preservation, mitigation, avoidance, protection, and/or restoration measures on existing and future project lands.
  • Develop project research designs and modify them to ensure timely completion within scope and budget.
  • Modify field techniques and recording procedures as necessary.
  • Provide oversight and leadership for field-based decisions regarding crew safety, conflict resolution, and problem solving.
  • Execute broader project goals based on research design objectives and applicable standards of investigation.
  • Interprets and provides advice on the National Historic Preservation Act and regulations of 36 CFR Part 800, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, and other cultural resources legislation.

Requirements

  • Master's degree and/or PhD from an accredited institution in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years documented experience in archaeology, plus 2 years documented supervisory and project management experience.
  • Firm understanding of local, state-level, and Federal regulatory compliance requirements governing CRM, including CEQA, Section 106 of the NRHP, NEPA, ARPA, and NAGPRA.
  • Demonstrated excellence with written and verbal communication skills, and ability to effectively within a team effort is important.
  • Regional experience specific to California and Nevada with proficient knowledge of state laws.
  • Ability to accurately and effectively perform QAQC of technical reports, regulatory correspondence.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with regulatory agencies, clients, and landowners.
  • Familiarity with prehistoric and/or historic artifact analysis, laboratory procedures, and equipment is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance and in a team environment, taking direction from project supervisors.
