PAR Environmental Services has an immediate need for a field archaeologist/crew chief to participate in various jobs in Tuolumne County beginning in March and continuing into September, 2025. There is a potential for continuing employment after September, based on work load.

PAR Environmental Services, Inc., a woman-owned Cultural Resources Management firm is currently accepting resumes for a full-time seasonal archaeologist. We perform projects throughout California including the Sierra Nevada, Mojave Desert, Central Valley, Northern California, Foothills, and Bay Area. The candidate must be willing to travel to project locations from PAR’s main office in Sacramento. Project durations typically range from several days to full ten-day rotations during the field season (May-November). This position is a full-time seasonal hourly position with accumulated personal leave based on hours worked. All workers are covered under Workers Compensation Insurance.

Candidates must be comfortable with strenuous hiking and difficult climate conditions. They must be knowledgeable of basic California history and prehistory, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, have the ability to identify prehistoric and historical artifacts and cultural features, possess a California driver’s license with 2 years clean driving record, possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Anthropology, and work efficiently and amicably with agencies, Native American groups, construction crews, and PAR crews. This role is hybrid remote in office, and therefore a strong preference will be given to candidates local to the Sacramento area. Although not required, candidates with master’s degrees are preferred.

Job Responsibility and Roles (Field):

This job includes a 50% or more fieldwork component. Candidate will be expected to lead crews. Three years minimum field experience, with one year in a crew lead or field supervisor role, is required for application. The ideal candidate will have five years or more of experience in the field, with at least two years of leading crews.

  • Strong commitment to crew safety;
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate and plan day to day with project PI;
  • Professional attitude when encountering members of communities and clients;
  • Ability to travel in remote locations for extended durations, and if necessary, camp;
  • Ability to stand, kneel, hike, and lift 30-50 lb of gear in rugged terrain for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to drive trucks off-road using 4WD, if necessary;
  • Ability to read topographic maps and aerial photographs;
  • Ability to use a handheld GPS unit, particularly ESRI’s field maps;
  • Ability to confidently lead other members of the crew with evaluation of sites, site recording, taking accurate field notes, digital photography, and mapping of sites.
  • Perform site monitoring, pedestrian survey, text excavation, data recovery excavation, laboratory work conditional on project needs.

Job Responsibility and Roles (Office):

This role is hybrid remote when not in the field (up to two remote days a week, beginning with one day a week remote for the first six months). Skills and expectations for office work include the following:

  • Demonstrated writing ability;
  • Experience writing California DPR forms;
  • Experience with Forest Service condition assessment forms and railroad logging segment records preferred;
  • Experience writing survey reports;
  • Experience with Caltrans reports preferred;
  • Ability to take feedback and apply it to future work;
  • Organized with willingness to perform own administration tasks (ie: filing and archiving jobs)
  • GIS skills with ArcMap and ArcPro strongly preferred.

Compensation will be dependent on California-specific experience and education. A copy of the applicant’s driving record from the DMV will be required upon hiring.
