The NAGPRA Assistant will support the NAGPRA Manager with all work required to maintain the Tribe’s commitment to the Native American Graves Protections and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), 1990. Responsibilities include preparing, creating, maintaining, and updating NAGPRA databases, assisting with tribal consultations and repatriation work, maintaining documentation, conducting research work, performing administrative tasks, and performing additional tasks as assigned.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct documentation, research, and data entry/database management work for NAGPRA collections.
  • Assist the NAGPRA Manager in responding to requests for information related to ethnographic, archaeological, and biological collections from the United States.
  • Assist with scheduling, initial consultations, and repatriation work, including but not limited to visit preparation, administrative tasks, documentation, and data entry.
  • Collaborate with museums, institutions, agencies, and the like regarding NAGPRA collections.
  • Assist with outreach efforts, including educational programs, community engagement, and public awareness initiatives.
  • Maintain and update records related to repatriation, consultations, and cultural items, ensuring compliance with NAGPRA regulations.
  • Assist in cataloging and archiving collections, ensuring proper documentation and storage protocols.
  • Participate in training, workshops, and professional development opportunities related to NAGPRA, cultural heritage, and museum studies.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining digital and physical files for NAGPRA projects and collections.
  • Perform routine facilities maintenance tasks related to storage, transportation, and preservation of collections as assigned.
  • Support administrative functions, including budget tracking, purchasing supplies, and coordinating meetings as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Proficiency in administrative tasks, including scheduling, preparing documentation, and supporting consultation and repatriation efforts.
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in documentation, research, and data entry
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity, particularly in handling sensitive historical and repatriation matters.
  • Ability to identify and correct errors proactively, ensuring high-quality outputs and smooth operations.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including email, word processing, and data entry.
