Position Summary:

Under the direction of the TEK Manager, the TEK Specialist will be responsible for a variety of tasks associated with various Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) Projects. These projects relate to areas of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, such as: forest and land management, aquatics and fisheries, cultural education, public outreach, native nursery operation and plant propagation, and other administrative tasks related to workshops, seminars, symposiums, meetings, consultations, and trainings.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct efforts to document and preserve traditional ecological knowledge through oral histories, interviews, and other appropriate methods.
  • Work closely with scientists, policymakers, and environmental planners to integrate TEK into conservation and sustainability initiatives.
  • Coordinate community outreach, workshops, and participatory research to enhance understanding and appreciation of TEK.
  • Assist in developing policies and programs that incorporate TEK in environmental decision-making.
  • Advocate for including traditional ecological knowledge in relevant local policies, regulations, and management plans.
  • Support research projects incorporating traditional ecological knowledge into scientific studies and conservation efforts.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and educational materials related to TEK applications and best practices.
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation processes to assess the effectiveness of TEK integration efforts.
  • Document changes in local ecosystems, wildlife behavior, and climate impacts.
  • Collect ecological samples (soil, water, plant specimens) as permitted.
  • Map culturally significant sites using GIS or traditional cartography methods.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Proficiency in administrative tasks, including scheduling meetings and preparing documentation and reports for workshops, training, and meetings.
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring documentation, research, and data entry accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to identify and correct errors proactively, ensuring high-quality outputs and smooth operations.
