Archaeological Field Technicians – Northern California

 

Piñon Heritage Solutions (Sacramento, CA) seeks several Archaeological Field Technicians for cultural resource management survey work mainly in northern California. These are hourly, primarily field-based positions, which are anticipated to start in mid-March of 2026 and continue to October 2026.

 

These projects involve pedestrian survey in rugged wooded terrain. The schedule will vary, but will likely be 8 days on (10 hour days with 2 hours of overtime included), 4 days off. Single-occupancy lodging, meals per diem, and some mileage will be provided. Pay rates are commensurate with experience and responsibilities. Hourly rates ranges from $25 to $32 per hour based on experience. Individuals based in northern California are preferred.

 

Field Technician Responsibilities:

  • Perform pedestrian transect surveys.
  • Recognize and document a wide range of prehistoric and historic-era resources using GPS technology (Esri Field Maps and IPads), California DPR forms, sketch maps, and digital photography.
  • Maintain written daily field notes or photographic logs as appropriate.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisory staff, always maintaining a high level of professionalism.
  • Maintain survey standards at all times.
  • Comply with project safety requirements.

 

Field Technician Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field, or enrollment in a college anthropology/archaeology program leading up to a BA in these fields. Lack of a degree, but having 5 or more years of experience in archaeological survey, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • At least 2 years of field experience surveying in forested environments. Experience should include work as a field archeologist in California or the western U.S.
  • Background in historic archaeology and historic mining are a plus.
  • Ability to read and understand maps and prepare sketch maps.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
  • The ability to walk or hike 10+ miles per day on rough and/or hazardous terrain and occasional climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing on rough terrain. Fieldwork may involve exposure to rain, sun, heat, wind, dust, animals, plants, wet conditions, biting insects, poison ivy, allergens, etc.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. of equipment/materials while walking across terrain.
