SJV Environmental Consulting is seeking qualified candidates for Archaeological Field Director positions supporting projects throughout Central California. We are a woman owned and LGBTQ+ owned small business centrally located in the San Joaquin Valley, providing cultural resources management services from the Sierra Nevada to the Central Coast.
This is an as needed position with a base pay range of $35–$40 per hour, depending on job related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include leading and overseeing archaeological fieldwork while supporting project managers and maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Lead archaeological crews during survey, site recordation, evaluation, construction monitoring, and laboratory work
- Ensure fieldwork, analyses, and deliverables meet quality assurance and quality control standards
- Maintain familiarity with current agency protocols and field procedures
- Contribute to technical reports, research designs, and treatment plans
- Train and mentor archaeological field technicians, including safety and resource identification
- Enforce and comply with all required safety protocols
- Communicate and coordinate with staff, clients, agency personnel, and Native American representatives
- Take initiative in problem solving and recommend improvements to field procedures
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Minimum requirements for consideration. Candidates must meet all of the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field
- Minimum of two years professional archaeological fieldwork experience
- At least six months experience in a supervisory role
- Experience using handheld GPS and mobile data collection platforms such as FieldMaps or Survey123
- Familiarity with California precontact and historic period cultural resources
- Ability to work independently and make field based decisions
- Strong collaboration, training, and mentoring skills
- Ability to hike 10–12 miles per day in difficult terrain and adverse weather while carrying up to 25 pounds
- Availability for extended field rotations of 10–12 days
- Ability to travel without restrictions and access to reliable transportation
- Valid driver’s license
- Strong organizational and communication skills
Desired Qualifications
Additional experience considered a plus. Ideal candidates may also possess:
- Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a related field
- Qualifications meeting the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Standards for Archaeology
- Eligibility for Crew Chief listing on a BLM Cultural Resources Use Permit
- Registration as a Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA)
- Strong technical writing and editing skills
- Experience with project scheduling and budget coordination
- Experience working with utilities and renewable energy projects
- Familiarity with NEPA, CEQA, and Section 106 compliance processes
