We are seeking an experienced Archaeologist to lead cultural resource and environmental compliance efforts supporting the Watershed Research and Training Center's diverse portfolio of forestry, wildfire resilience, watershed restoration, recreation, and natural resource management projects throughout Northern California.
This position plays a key role in helping multidisciplinary teams successfully navigate federal and state environmental compliance requirements while protecting cultural resources and supporting landscape-scale restoration.
The successful candidate will conduct archaeological surveys, evaluations, documentation, monitoring, and compliance activities in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and other applicable federal and state regulations. The position also includes hiring, supervising, and mentoring seasonal archaeology staff.
The Archaeology Division works alongside foresters, biologists, hydrologists, prescribed fire practitioners, tribal partners, and land managers to develop practical compliance strategies that both protect cultural resources and support successful project delivery.
Projects include forest health, wildfire resilience, prescribed fire, watershed restoration, meadow restoration, transportation improvements, recreation infrastructure, and post-fire recovery efforts. The Archaeology Division is housed within our Forestry and Fuels Program but supports projects across multiple organizational programs. This position includes a variable mix of office and field work depending on seasonal workloads and project priorities, and requires strong collaboration with internal staff, project partners, agencies, landowners, and tribal governments.
